Will has trouble making friends and can be perceived as awkward or even cold by others. He is courageous and highly intelligent, and develops a knack for manipulation, even being able to trick Hannibal on a number of occasions. Will has an incredible gift for empathy, easily being able to sense and interpret the feelings and motives of other people, specifically killers.

Abigail Hobbs (Patient/Surrogate Daughter, Deceased)
Background
Personality Hannibal used his position of power to persuade some of his more susceptible patients into committing murders, mostly because he was curious to see what would happen. Hannibal also continued killing people, preferring to kill those he deemed as ”rude” because they were no better than “pigs” to him. Hannibal became known as the Chesapeake Ripper, a serial killer that would mutilate his victim while they were alive and surgically remove their organs so he could cook them, preferably when he was hosting a dinner party.

Background
Appearances The TV series portrays Crawford as deliberately pushing the limits of Graham's sanity in order to fully exploit his protegé's gift for profiling serial killers. At the end of the first season, he reluctantly arrests Graham after finding evidence that he is the serial killer known as "The Copycat Killer"; he is unaware that Lecter had framed Graham. When Graham is exonerated in the second season, Crawford helps him with an elaborate plan to entrap and capture Lecter, which puts Crawford's career in jeopardy when his superiors at the FBI learn of it. In the second season finale, Crawford attempts to arrest Lecter, but Lecter escapes after severely injuring Crawford.

Will Graham (Patient & Confidant)
Background
Appearances Bedelia retired from her profession after Neal Frank, a former patient, supposedly "swallowed his tongue" while trying to strangle her (it is implied in a conversation between her and Lecter that he was the one who killed the patient). She took responsibility for his actions but has not taken responsibility for his death. Before disappearing, she visits Will Graham in the psychiatric hospital and tells him quite plainly, she believes his truths about Hannibal's real mannerisms. Bedelia and Hannibal are talking because Hannibal has to leave Italy and cannot come back for a long time. She has packed Hannibal's bag telling him that this is where they leave each other. She is aware that Hannibal plans to eat her, but not hastily. In The Wrath of the Lamb, in a post-credits scene, Du Maurier sits at a table set for three, her own left leg severed, cooked and prepared as an entrée.

Margot Verger (Wife)

Jack Crawford (Colleague)
Background
Personality At the beginning of the series, Alana is shown to be an intelligent and compassionate woman, dedicated to her work and deeply concerned for others' well-being, in particular Will. She disagrees with anything she views as unethical or potentially damaging to others, and so clashes with Hannibal over his unorthodox treatment methods and Crawford's use of Will to solve crimes despite his mental instability. After her near-death experience in Season 2, Alana displays a darker, colder and more cynical side. Alana displays skills of manipulation and deception. However, she still maintains her compassionate nature, forming a strong bond with Margot and later having a change of heart and helping Hannibal to escape Mason, though not until he promises he will save Will.

Hannibal Lector (Abuser, Foster Father)

Alana Bloom (Caretaker)
Background
Personality Abigail had a soft and a naive personality that inspired protective feelings in most people she met. Although she was disgusted by her father's actions, her fear of him compelled her to help him capture his victims in order to save her own life. Abigail's strongest trait was probably her own sense of self-preservation, nevertheless she cared about other people and had no desire to hurt anyone but was prone to manipulative behaviour, a trait which she may have inherited from her psychopathic father, whom she often feared she was similar to. Perhaps due to her naivety, Abigail was highly suggestible, coerced by her father into helping him, easily hypnotised by Hannibal and ultimately brainwashed by him.
