Launched in 1982, the name of the Korean professional baseball league was the Korea Baseball Championship [2] until 2014, but it was re-launched under the KBO League in 2015 to integrate the league's brand identity. The governing body is the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO Secretariat). It marked its 40th season as of 2021, since its creation as a professional sport in 1982.
The club participated in the league's first year, including the Samsung Lions, OB Bears, MBC Blue Dragon, Sammi Superstars, Haitai Tigers, and Lotte Giants.[3][4] The historic first game was held on March 27, 1982, at Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium. The first pitch was made by Chun Doo-hwan, then president, and the result of the game was MBC Blue Dragon's Lee Jong-do hit a walk-off grand slam against Samsung pitcher Lee Sun-hee, and MBC Blue Dragon took the victory.
A total of 10 teams and nine stadiums are playing in the league.
Most of the clubs that appear belong to large Korean companies.[7] In other words, it is a battle between conglomerates.
