The Sacagawea dollar was issued by Congress in 1997, as an alternative for Susan B. Anthony coin. U.S. Mint conducted a design competition for the new dollar coin's obverse, and they selected Sacagawea as a model, who helped the Lewis and Clark expedition of America.

Until 2008, its reverse side was depicting a soaring eagle. Since 2009, U.S Mint started to produce a coin with various reverse designs. This is called the Native American Series.
